Miguel Calderon - Aggressively Mediocre/Mentally Challenged/Fantasy Island - 1998
The painting's on the wall (on the far left and second from the right) kick ass!
Those would be some awesome posters. The others might be cool too, but this picture's awful. Only one painting isn't obscured by what looks like a miniature set on one side and a tent on the other.
If you've seen The Royal Tenenbaums you may recognize them.
I think they're what this guy is talking about: In fact, one of the biggest laughs in the movie comes not from dialogue, but instead from a bit of really funny and very appropriate art direction.
It took me some looking to find out who did them. Now I just have to find out if it's possible to get a copy of them.
Update (Feb. 5, 2002):
I called the number on the contact page for that gallery this morning . And was transferred to a woman named Sara who told me Miguel Calderon doesn't do prints. That they've been having alot of inquiries about them recently. She said they're part of a body of work, whatever that means, as a reason for not printing them seperately I guess. Then she said he's working on two films so nothing will probably happen with the paintings for awhile.
So, if you care, you can call 212-627-6000, or email andrea@rosengallery.com and bother them.
More grist for the mill (Feb. 7, 2002):
A halfway decent picture of one of the paintings. Plus some other cool stuff.
Seems like everyone had the same reaction to those paintings while watching the movie. notsobiglebowski:
Anyone know where I can download images of the art from Eli's apartment? I thought that one of the best scenes in the whole movie was when Richie and Eli were talking, and the camera moved from one piece of art to the other with the character at the very bottom - I was giggling uncontrollably. What the heck is happening in those paintings?
ThatGirlJing:
Dude, but how distracting were those paintings in Cowboy Cash's apartment? My boyfriend and I could not stop laughing during that whole scene between Ritchie and Eli...I can't even begin to recall any of the dialogue at all.
And a very thorough movie info page. For example:
Paintings at Eli Cash's by: Miguel Calderon, Eliot Puckette, and Hugo Guiness

If you find a printable jpg of the paintings; where to get posters, lithographs, or whatever email me.
